Reducing The Intensity Of Yellow

QUICK TIP: Reducing the intensity of yellow.

It is common to reduce the intensity or saturation of a colour (e.g. yellow) by adding a small amount of its complementary colour (e.g. purple), however this can sometimes result in ‘mud’.

To solve this, the darker colour needs to be value matched to the lighter colour before combining the two. Add white to the purple to bring the value in line with the yellow. Once you have value matched, you are less likely to end up with a muddy yellow when combining the two colours.

Tip: Burnt sienna is a good colour to de-intensify blue because it is already less saturated than orange.
